Hebden ride after the Singletrack Xmas Party. Hangovers, crazy steep climb to start (Buttress) a few fun descents, Mooch for food and drink :)

Out of the door before 0630, a heavy frost making the road sparkle in the light from my HID. I was soon offroad, frozen puddles cracking beneath my tyres as I climbed the deserted trail. After riding for about an hour I stopped on Rivi Pike to cook breakfast as the skies began to lighten. A bacon sarnie had never tasted so good. Cooking gear packed away, forks wound out, big ring engaged, time to head home. Ice made the trail slippery in places but staying off the brakes and a bit of luck kept me upright. I was soon back into the warmth of my house for breakfast number 2. Great start to the day :)

Had to take advantage of the sunny weather so headed out for a 2nd ride after lunch. Still very cold and there was plenty of ice on the trails.

I noticed that a headlight bulb on the car had blown yesterday so I pedalled to Halfords to pick up a new one (well actually 2 new ones as they were BOGOF). Had a puncture on the way back which was a pain but at least fitting the new bulbs was easy - less than 10 mins to do both of them despite having to remove the radiator grill and the whole headlight assembly. I like stuff that’s simple to fix :)

9000km passed sometime during today’s ride. That’ll be about it for the year, I’m not going to reach 6000 miles or 10000km. The sun made a welcome return today, shame it’s not warm sun at this time of year!

I thought I’d turned into a cycling god as I powered up a hill at over 20mph. Reality soon hit home when I turned a corner and felt like I’d ridden into a brick wall. It was pretty windy! Just another hour on the fixie again today to keep my legs ticking over, hopefully I’ll get a decent offroad ride in on Sunday over in Hebden Bridge.

The overnight stormy weather had gone, replaced by low cloud/fog and rain, the kind of conditions that soak you in minutes. As the wind had died down a bit I didn’t actually mind being wet and it was actually quite a pleasant ride and some excellent songs kept popping up on my MP3 player.

Quick trip into town to pick up some contact lenses. Popped into Booths whilst I was there to get some beef and chillies for tea and also grabbled a few bottles of Christmas Ale including Bah Humbug, Rosey Nosey and and some Shepherd Neame Christmas Ale (7%!). Somehow managed to miss the heavy rain that we’ve had for most of the day but the strong wind made riding back up the hill with a full courier bag hard work.

Grey, dreary day here today. It was dark enough for me to feel the need to use a rear flashing light at 2.30 in the afternoon! Legs felt good but I was running out of daylight so just rode for an hour.

I must have been mad going out in today’s horrendous conditions. The trails were so wet that my bike has come back cleaner than when I left! Still, at least the trails were pretty much empty, just a few walkers, no cyclists to be seen.

First fun ride of the week. Legs had a bit more zip in them which was good. Trails very muddy in places (I guess that the overnight stormy weather didn’t help) but at least that kept them relatively quiet and the Surly with it’s huge mud clearances is the perfect tool for the job. It’s nice having a little digicam to take on rides again, won’t do much for my fitness as I end up stopping more but it’s fun to stop and take a few pics. Still getting to grips with the camera. Not sure I like the autoISO mode that I’ve had it set to, it seems to go for a lower setting than I’d choose myself leading to some quite slow shutter speeds in the gloomy winter light. Will have a go with setting it manually next time I’m out and about.

Very muddy out today, could hear everything grinding away as I pedalled. Glad I was on a singlespeed, less costly damage :)
