09/09/2003: "P7 singlespeed without tensioner"

Have been playing around with my P7 this evening to see if I could run it singlespeed without the Surly Singleator that I have been using.

I tried 32:15 and 32:16 but these didn't work. 32:17 looks quite promising although the chain tension might be a bit slack. Only time will tell I suppose. It certainly looks better now :^)

I think the chain tension is being adversely affected by the gravitational pull from the unfeasibly long stem.

Hi, I found this site very useful in working what gear ratios where likely to fit:

32:17 was too loose, the chain came off a couple of times.

Have now tried 34:16 which works, so in theory 36:18 will work as well which is a far more knee friendly gear :^)

If you were running an 1/8th chain it could be a lot slacker before it would come off.
You would need to run it on a 1/8th Ring and Cog though.
I had a track bike with an 1/8th chain, used to run it really slack, even on bumpy outdoor tracks it never came off.
Just an idea. :-)
